Smoothies!

vega-smoothieI know I said I wasn’t going to talk about any pills or potions but my smoothie is just great for your general health; it’s not a weight loss thing particularly.  What this smoothie does is help me get the appropriate amount of veggies and other nutrients in my day without adding too many calories. 148 calories per serving in fact.  This smoothie provides 2 servings of vegetables, some omega 3 oils, iron, calcium, fibre, protein and a whole whack of other great things all in a vegan powder.

What’s in it?

  • 1 portion Vega Energizing Smoothie
  • 1 tbsp psyllium husk
  • 1 generous tsp Maca powder
  • 1 tbsp E3Live®
  • 1 cup water

You may be asking “what the heck is Maca?”. It is a “super food” from Peru that has a very lengthy shelf life and provides a significant nutritional boost to your diet.  It is rich in iodine, zinc, amino acids and vitamin C.  It has been linked to an increase in fertility and amounts of copper, zinc, selenium, manganese, iron and boron that are crucial for metabolism, organ function, healthy skin and enzyme production.  It’s got a pretty complete range of B vitamins.  Generally it’s just plain good.

Psyllium husk is an excellent source of soluble fibre (see my post on fibre here) Thankfully it is considered safe for people who have intestinal or bowel issues.  If you are in a low carb diet it helps boost your fibre intake which is really important to keep everything flowing through you properly. Psyllium also tends to make you feel full which means you will feel less hungry through the day.

E3Live® is ridiculous in that it has a lot of what your body needs to stay healthy.  Nutritionally, E3Live® provides more than 65 vitamins, minerals, amino acids & essential fatty acids. That’s a lot of goodness right there in a tbsp of algae.  Technically it’s “pond scum” as my room-mate calls it but he also admits that he feels something helpful missing from his smoothie if he doesn’t get it.

Without my Smoothie I just don’t feel like I’ve gotten all I can in the day.

Try it. It tastes…well not so great, but it really is worth it.
